Charles Louis Way

Charles Louis Way served as a staff sergeant (Company I 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division) in the European campaign in World War II.  He was BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) Man and he carried all his own ammunition.  He was in the Battle for St. Lo that was won in July of 1944.  He was also involved in the Battle of the Bulge from 12/16/44 to 1/16/45.  Many months went by without Sergeant Way having adequate food.  Mostly he and his men ate green potatoes from the fields and a few eggs that they could find.  He was involved in much action and ended the war Wolfret Hausen, Germany.  He remained with the Army as a supply sergeant at Camp Butler, North Carolina until January 1946.  He received many medals including the Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal, Combat Infantryman, Sharpshooter and Rifleman Badge and Bar.
